Field Trips

Teen Drug Summit

Last year, some of our 8th grader students had the opportunity to attend the Teen Drug Summit organized by the Wichita Crime Commission. During this field trip, students learned about the dangers of substance use and heard powerful, firsthand accounts from families who have lost loved ones to drug abuse. They also had the chance to engage with local law enforcement, gaining valuable insights. To keep things fun and educational, we wrapped up the day with a game of JeoPARTY! Here are some student testimonials on the day overall:

"We can help prevent these deaths. 7/10 pills contain fentanyl. Just because a drug is legal doesn’t mean you should use it. If you don’t find a good companion to walk with, walk alone."
"We learned so much in a fun way to learn. I learned that it only takes a grain to kill so many people and countless lives have been taken from this terrible drug. I hope one day we can find a way to get rid of this evil pill."
"I think students should know the risk of any drug and how it can lead to more down the road and poor decisions that can endanger you and your loved ones. I think it was a fun and informational field trip. I would definitely recommend it for years to come."
"I definitely learned a LOT of facts that I didn't know. Using one vape is the same as smoking 20 cigarettes. Someone dies from drugs every 8.57 minutes. One pill can kill. Even fentanyl in the amount of a grain of sand can kill you."
"I thought it was very beneficial, because I learned more about the dangers of drugs than I have ever previously learned in my life. I knew that they were bad and not to use them, but this summit really got into the details about the dangers of drugs."

Future Maker Mobile Learning Lab

This past fall, the Future Maker Mobile Learning Lab from WSU Tech came out to teach our 6th grade students about what their institution has to offer! Our students had the opportunity to experiment with a VR welder simulation, an emergency medical response simulation, and a 3D computer programming system to learn about drone flight patterns. We wrapped up our session learning about their JumpStart program where students can take college classes in high school for free!

6th grade at wsu tech

In March, the 6th grade class toured two WSU Tech campuses, learning about their Aviation program and their Culinary and Hospitality program. Students had the opportunity to explore WSU Tech's aviation facility and learn about what it takes to become a pilot. We then traveled to NICHE to learn about their culinary program and how students learn about the hospitality industry as well as have a delicious lunch prepared by the culinary students!

7th Grade at Hutchinson Community College

This past fall, our 7th grade students had the opportunity to tour Hutchinson Community College's campus and learn about the different programs they offer! They started the day touring different academic buildings and asking admissions questions and wrapped up the day with lunch in the campus cafeteria and some time in the sun on the football field!

8th Grade at Wichita State University

In April, our 8th grade students had an eventful day at WSU! We kicked off the morning with presentations from their Admissions Department, Financial Aid Department, Shocker Career Accelerator Department, and Student Engagement and Belonging Department. The students had a blast playing a few trivia games to get to know all that WSU has to offer! We rounded out the day with a campus tour to see different academic buildings and had lunch on campus!

Careers on wheels

Every two years our district offers an incredible event for our K-2 students to learn about different careers! At this event, students have the opportunity to check out different vehicles that our volunteers depend on to do their jobs. They absolutely love touring different vehicles, from race cars to tractors to a very popular ice cream truck!

Reality u

Each February, our district puts on an event for all 8th and 10th grade students to learn all about financial literacy! Reality U is a simulation where students travel around to different booths to make financial decisions from what house they want to buy, to how much they need to spend on childcare, to how much debt / student loans they have, and more! This simulation allows students to get a real world perspective on how their current grades can affect their job status and financial situation in the future!
